Water Pump Identification

I have been trying to determine what the correct water pump for my 1966 289 engine is and I am getting conflicting information.

So far I think that I have determined:

- The 289 had a different water pump to the 260.

- There are different types of pump fitted to the 289, the cast iron one with a backing plate and the ally one without a backing plate.

- The 1964-65 289 had a different pump to the '66 289.

- What ever type of pump is fitted, all the 289 pumps have a discharge port on the right hand side of the car.

Am I correct and are there any other ways of determining which pump to buy to ensure correct alignment & function?

Thanks

I think you have the information pretty correct.

What is correct for your car depends on what timing cover you have. The 260 timing cover has half of the water pump cavity cast into it. See item 301133413237 on the US ebay.com. You can usually see the swirl marks on the timing cover half of the cavity from the fluid that has passed through over time. So if your timing cover looks pretty much like that, you need the aluminum pump with the pump vanes exposed.

The style timing cover that uses the cast iron pump with its own backing plate is like ebay.com item 151249346092.

My apologies for not having pictures to attach directly. But at least you have a place to find them.

(BTW, that large right- hand- of- the- car hose connection on the pump you mentioned is I believe an input to the pump from the bottom of the radiator rather than discharge from the pump. But as you say, it indeed needs to be on that side to match up with the hose to the bottom of the stock radiator. Some pumps have a different rotation and fluid flow, I believe.)

Hope there is something helpful in all of that.:)

Part 2

I just remembered that you had asked about correct alignment and I did not comment.

Even if you have the right pump to match with the timing cover, there is a risk that hub on the shaft for the fan pulley needs to be pressed back for proper belt alignment. An otherwise correct type of pump, intended say for a Mustang, will have the pulley too far forward. The correct distance between the back of the pump mounting surface that mates to the timing cover and the front edge of the hub is between 4 3/4 inches and 4 7/8 inches. Depending who you ask.

Apologies for the oversight, hope the information is helpful.:)
