Over 32 years ago I started stripping my MKII to restore it as I had my done to my MK1A.

In finally starting with my trunk I removed these 2 straps (pop riveted on) from the softop cavity.

What are they for? Do I need to remake?

I can't every remember using them.

WOW! I've never actually seen those straps!
All that was left of mine were those 2 little plates on the left still riveted on.
I've been told that they are used to keep the soft top tonneau from 'falling in' when the top is up.
Do you have a pic of where those 'Tenax' fasteners attach on the other end??

Norm,
When your soft top was in the erect position, (poor choice of words) These straps were buttoned into position and acted as a “bridge of support” to keep the soft top boot from falling into the storage well and looking generally sloppy!

So yes, definatly put them back! You don't want to sag!

The hook was placed in one of two holes you will find in the lip of the middle (long) soft top retaining braces. Then you brought the Tenax fastener over the top of the folded boot and attctched it. This kept the boot in place when you shut the boot lid as the air preasure would flip it forward.

You should find two rivet holes left in the forward sheet metal of the stow area where they were attacthed.

Thanks all.

Yes, I removed the 2 pop rivets/strap

Looks like I will have to remanufacture as these have had it.....unless someone sells a repro.

I think Martha has that material. Be sure and re-cad plate those hooks. After all, it's a MKII !! :)

Thanks all.

If you find the material from Martha or somewhere else and have to buy more than you need, I would be interested in taking enough of the excess off your hands, at a reasonable cost, to redo mine. The rubber parts of mine melted several years ago from the car being under an all weather car cover sitting in the hot central Texas summer sun for a couple of seasons.:)

Thanks, I looked at his catalog but they were not in the illustration. I see they are in the listing.

I will order from Rick with my next order. I have about $3,000 more in parts to order from him yet....

I bought parts from him out of his SJ house 35-36 years ago.

I'm flat surprised to see yours in such preserved condition. Mine look like very used chewing gum on hot pavement. Paul did an excellent job of describing the use . . . . .

Well, my car was only on the road for 14 years.

It spent the rest of it's life in my garages and 8,000 miles in 5 moving vans.
