Where in the US can I get a speedometer repaired?

Do I really need 450 HP?

450hp doesnt make the car look like someone with a LCD gadget fetish has been fiddling your car

Even with the face changed to OEm looking text the LCD display just looks wrong.. i think change te guts of a speedo .. or as someone else suggested use a GPS.. a friend did on the way to our national and we both used it to calibrate our actual speed... and we still have the great looking original gauges.

Also can it be calibrated for Klms/hour to suit the rest of the world not stuck on imperial.
Yes, they have those funky KPH faces too.

A 1" X .75" LCD panel is hardly a "LCD gadget fetish", if installed 90% of people looking at the car will never even notice.

Possibly, depends if they have had a bubbly or two. Still waiting for someone to say they have bought one with the correct bezel.,

My Speedo came back from Nisonger still not fixed.

These are my comments enclosed with the unit when first sent it out for repair:

The enclosed speedometer SN 5321/08 is from my 1966 Sunbeam Tiger 1A. It doesn’t register the speed when I first start driving and eventually works intermittently, is inaccurate, and the needle sticks in position. It has 51k miles and just came out of a 12 year storage. The seller says it worked fine prior to storage. I have driven it several hundred miles with no improvements to the performance. Please rebuild the internal workings to OE specs and DO NOT reset the vehicle mileage back to 000.0.

When it came back it looked good as new but it wasn't fixed. The following are my comments sent back with the unit:

I have installed this unit after rebuild Invoice #44346 and have determined that the internal components are dragging in this unit. While driving the car, I can touch the cable at the back of the unit and it is very sensitive in that the needle responds by bouncing more or less. I removed it from the car and used a short piece of old cable to turn it with my fingers. With only slight wobble in the cable, as I rotate it, the needle jumps up as high 45 mph. I have attached a photo depicting the needle stuck at 45 mph with the cable held slightly off center. I’m disappointed that your calibration equipment did not expose this problem. Please make necessary repairs and return promptly.

I got it back and it is better but still begins to wonder up and down about 5 mph when I get up to speeds above 50mph. It appears to be veerry sensitive and if this doesn't improve during the warranty period, a may send it back again.

^^^ This is exactly why I will be installing a modern GPS fed speedo in my car with a modified face to match the original (yes, it will have a LCD readout).

Why keep playing with 50's technology that did not work great when new?

Back in the day, perhaps in the CAT Shop Notes, someone discovered that a jumping speedo problem could be from a worn cable assembly. From your hand testing, I would not immediately jump to that conclusion in your case, but it is something to consider.

That cable does contort though at least one tight (180 degree) bend on its way from the trans. Eventually the cable will wear through the housing inner lining and start to intermittently hang-up, release, etc. A dried out cable (no effective lubricant) could produce the same effect. Then is there is always the possibility of a pickup gear problem. Maybe it is hanging up and producing a vibration that is the equivalent to your hand wiggling of the input. I also vaguely recall there may be a thrust washer of some sort in the cable assembly that keeps the cable from pushing in and out as the pickup gear turns. If it wears, that also can creat problems. Not totally sure about that part however.

Just some things to consider, even if at first blush they does not seem likely to be the problem. Would be nice if someone nearby had a satisfactory working unit you could borrow for a test...

I'm hoping to have one of these together soon... should match the tach nicely...
It will run on either GPS or speedo sender...

Duke- sell the 50's technology and let someone else enjoy it- maybe a 90's BMW

Stick a TomTom to the windshield

Stick a TomTom inside the windshield and you get nav, speed and a warning when you exceed the limit.

Put it in the box with your rags, wax and tireblack at the car show.

The stock speedo does not need calibration for shows. My fun meter can be pegged anytime driving a Tiger.

It has a new cable from SS.

I failed to mention it has a new cable from SS and the gear looks really good. It doesn't stick anymore after they replaced the bushing inside but still wonders around at speeds above 50 mph.

Yep, I run a Garmin and do exactly that. Thats the main reason I have not put any priority to the speedo. I don't even have a cable, took it out the last time the engine and tranny were out.

90's BMW, nahhh BTDT with a 80's M535i that I turbocharged and it ran a TEC3 engine management system..........I'll keep my dead reliable 454 HP Tiger (with go fast technology) thanks.

Duke- sounds like you know your Bmws. I wish mine looked as good as yours. did you have any trouble with the turbo from over boosting

Anything would look great if you put enough $$$$ into it ;)

No, had a electronic boost control for the waste gate. I did run into problems with blowing head gaskets. Turns out the block deck was not flat, off .008. Safe boost for a M30 is ~14 PSI. Was getting over 300 HP to the wheels. I could program the engine management, the boost controller, the water injection and the traction control (race logic) which also had a launch mode and full throttle shifting. It just turned into a big headache and I sold it. Took the money and bought Apple stock, nine months later sold the stock for a $6000 profit and bought my Tiger.

Pity it wasn't in a 635i body!.. or even better retro fit into a 3.0CS shell.

A friend and I modified a round tail light 2002, looked at going injection off a 520 (similar to a tii syestem) but ended up with mahle domed pistons, cam, flowed head with bigger valves and twin 45 DCOE.. had blistein shocks, king springs, LSD out of a 323i and front brakes of a 530i... car went and stopped so well.. now its sitting on stands in his parents backayard where it has been for 5 years since he moved abroad.

Served in Ansbach?

@Duke:
Hey have you served in Ansbach?
I live in Erlangen, not far away from Ansbach:)

I live in Erlangen, not far away from Ansbach:)

I was stationed at Illesheim at the time. The salvage yard was at Ansbach.

I paid $150 for the car.

The second time I was station in Germany, I lived in Parsburg. That is very close to you.

Hi Duke,
both are very close to Erlangen, i think only half an hour away...
We had Army tanks 2 kilometers away from where i live until 1993.. it was very cool to see and hear them driving around.
We even had some officers with their family livin in our street. One of them had what i later remembered as a Corvette C3...
If you ever has the oportunity to come back around Erlangen/Nürnberg, let me know:)
