Where in the US can I get a speedometer repaired?

I have searched on this forum and havn't had any luck on the subject.
The speedo, (1966 Sunbeam Tiger 1A), doesn’t register when I first start driving and eventually works intermittently, is inaccurate, and the needle sticks in position. The odometer works well and so I know it's not the cable, and that probably wouldn't cause the needle to stick anyway. It has 51k miles showing and just came out of a 12 year storage. The seller says it worked fine prior to storage. I have driven it 200 miles with no improvements to the speedo performance. Any advice on a good place to contact and send it to would be appreciated.

I sent mine out to Nisonger. They do great work; the gauge will come back looking brand new. I've used them on other projects as well.:)

I used these guys. They have been around forever. In fact they rebuilt my 52 mgtd gauges 30+ years ago (which still work) as well as my tigers tach more recently. They are also highly recommended in all the British car forums and while I was there he was doing work for people all over the country. If I recall the gentlemans name is Morris

Good luck,

Thanks! Another email inquiry just went out!:)

Let us know what you find out as I too would like to restore my speedo one day.

Wow! There's a LOT of what sounds like good options here... I'm going to have to get my speedo tuned up this winter as it's now completely dead!

I DO remember someone mentioning sending their Tiger speedo to this place with good results but I can't remember if it was on a forum, the 'list' or somewhere else...

They fixed my Tach 30 years ago. Been fixing British gauges for a long time.

Used Pauls

He did my speedo and tach converting its guts to work with the Petronix, he is a few miles away so no shipping really helped.

I had some troubles with the cable and the drive gear as well ending up changing out the original cable for a CAT parts one which had a length problem.

After replacing the gear and getting a proper length cable, it was have him beat the inner cable in his square die to get another 1/2 inch out of it. He makes his own cables as well.

If the cars sits for a week or so the needle gets stuck and takes a palm bump on the dash when rolling to get it going, go figure.

Not up to taking it out again, figure just an old car quirk.

There is a Tigers web page which shows the radio shack or e store parts to buy and convert a tach yourself, but I really wanted to drive the car without the holes in the dash.

Oh, PS there also is a good thread related to the LAT tachs that were on epay and converting a modern Autometer brand tach.

How about taking a modern GPS speedo and puting the Jaeger face on it? Just like we did with the tach.

Six pack says you repainted the speedo needle.

The paint gets sticky in the heat and bonds the needle to the zero stop.

Scrape the paint off the side of the needle just where it hits the pin and all will be well.

Been there done that.

News back from Speedhut on the GPS Speedo -

Duke,
We can make the dial face very similar, we would just need to know the font type (or a font type that you prefer that is similar), and our LCD screen would need to be in the same spot on the dial face. Also, I'm not sure what you mean about the OEM inner and outer bezel. We would give you the gauge and you could put the inner and outer bezel on yourself. We'd be happy to send you a proof of your gauge once we come up with the artwork proof. And here are the basic prices for the customizations that would be applied to your gauges:

--Font type - $25
--Tic marks - $25

I sent back the following questions -

How about if I send you the gauge face, would that help to get it perfect?
Would want everything to include the Jaeger symbol and serial numbers.

What would illuminate with the modified face?

I would have to take apart your gauge to remove the bezel, is that easy to
do?

So for less that it costs to have the OEM speedo refurbished, you can have the above 4" GPS speedo, chalk full of features, with a very close to matching face.

Not wanting to be a kill joy...but.....why not just carry a portable GPS
and be done with it. Seems like allot of work and you don't have the lady inside to give you directions along the way...

To have an accurate Speedo.......much more so that the OEM even working perfectly. All the additional features are quite a bonus. Like I said, cheaper than getting one rebuilt only to be accurate at one speed and with one rear end gear.

You can change your gears all you want and a GPS speedo will be accurate.

Spedo cable, rear gear, tire size....no longer a factor.

Maybe right

I spent 150 or 175 to have the speedo serviced. Then had paid 60 or so to CAT for the cable which was too short then had Paul school me on the screwball working of the gear. The pesky gear can look slightly worn and not work at all. I ended up replacing a stock part that didn't need replacing pulled out two of my remaining 12 hairs on top of my head. The aggravation on R and R the cable and the speedo several times. Not fun stuffing myself up under the dash. Add to this the aggravation on R and R the cable and the speedo several times. Not fun stuffing myself up under the dash. I got rather fast at it but not a fun thing to do.

Stock look would be fine but no LCD even at the bottom.

IDK if the speedo art work has been done by Paul from the Tigers utd site but he did do the tach and other silkscreen lettraset rub on style in correct font.

Oh no needle painting was done but thanks for the input. I do not have to pound the dash I can just not avoid the first pothole

Also can it be calibrated for Klms/hour to suit the rest of the world not stuck on imperial.

Hey Duke.. you said yu plan on going 5 speed in the near future.. given your motor.. 5 speed.. are you going to ask them to scale the speedo to 160 or 180mph? :D

As for all the features and LCD display.. just looks odd in a classic car IMHO.. do you really need all that readout info? Just get a modern speedo or GPS speedo if you are that concerened and jamb behind a stock face.
