Project Update air cleaner reproduction

Just a quick update on the AC project. Slower than I expected on the mold and proof but I have seen the pictures and all looks good. No real issues except that the mfg had projects ahead of ours. That is my report to the Club, so good news: still coming and bad news: slower that I hoped. Lee

Lee... Thank you for the update. I have been waiting for a proper reproduction.

I received the proof of the air cleaner. Oh my!!!!!!!!!!!! Some minor tweaking and it is a home run. Getting comments to the Mfg now and you will not believe how nice this will be. Will bring them to Monterey for all of you to see. I hope to make my investment back in a couple hundred years or less but we will finally be able to own concourse air cleaners with no dents, waves, dull lettering, holes drilled in them etc. Lee

Seen it and

So far better than the original stamping, like too good. Might have to distress it or add 5 coats of paint. I suppose if plating copper nickle n chrome might also soften it up.

Would it be possible to see a few pics of the proof please?

Also, because I'm a sad geeky engineer, some pics of the tooling too?

Thanks

The tooling is not ours but we are the exclusive vendors. It is a three step process outsourced to three places one that stamps it, one install fittings and one stamps AC text, then boxed. Still evaluating proof and some time till final proof. Lee

First Look

Here is the first look. I did not bother painting the bottom the fittings are 100%

This came in this Monday and I was to take it to SUNI for Lee and show it around, but I whimped out and stayed home.

Sorry for the smaller picture. If you see this in person with your reading glasses on there are some fine, and I mean really fine details that need a little touch. I guess the fine detail of the stamping can easily handle a 4 coats of rattle can finish. A body shop primer sealer rather that a primer surfacer may also create a softer image. In addition a crisp detail would stand out better in a copper nickel chrome plating job.

Well boyz, those days of stupid high prices paid for a OEM air cleaner housing are officially over. So will the threat of theft at car shows...Thank god.

MKII wheel well trim and grill next please.

That proof looks great--can't wait to see it in person in Monterey. Will they be in production by then?

Air cleaner theft? Hell, I removed my glove box cubby door with Carroll's signature today before attending SIR vintage racing. today! :) Call me "cynical." :)

When you are one wing nut away from a $1000 +/- air cleaner...hell yea. I personally feel the the old snakes signature is not worth much.

Wing nut? Nah- I use a tricked out polished billet designer knob on my air cleaner, which ALSO has Mr. Shelby's signature.

I met him many years ago when I was in art school and assisting on a photo shoot in which he starred, and I am quite happy to have had that experience and the memory. It was long before I coveted a Cobra or a Tiger. Call Carroll Shelby what you will- but he was one of a kind- a legend- the likes of whom we are not likely to see again- at least in this lifetime. He struck me as being the biggest rooster in the yard but with a twinkle and a wink in his eye- not really taking himself all that seriously. That day was great fun for all.

The fact that I have two of his signatures on my car means quite a bit to me.

YMMV. Obviously.

Lee-
Have you considered exploring a method of transferring said signature to your new repro? I, for one, would be very interested! Surely the technology exists at a relatively affordable price. :)

Our collective brains on the details like the numbers stamped on the lid.
I think this thread should be moved soon to the parts for sale category.

You can only put a transfer of a genuine Shelby signature on an Alger!

I wouldn't care if my Carroll Shelby autograph on my car didn't enhance the value one penny...the few minutes I spent talking with Carroll before and after signing my car are priceless!

For starters.. offering anything comercially with the CS name would likely get a lawsuit.. he, and i assume his trust will continue to be, quite vigilant on that front.

If someone wants it that bad... get a pen out and start practicing!

I would like to say congratulations to lee on this project. I looked into doing it 4 years ago and just couldnt make the numbers to break even.. that said labor costs in AU are high... which hurt the costing a lot.

well done on the efforts... they look great... i hope they sell well and for the price you need ot recoup your cost.

I am not sure if Shelby American still has the autopen rig still going but they used it on a lot of items. One easy to tell the difference is that CS put 2 hash marks under his name--the autopen uses 3. You could always see if they are still offering that service.
