I contacted the seller - A Kia dealer in East Texas - and told him he may be mis-repesenting the car. He invited me to come to the dealership and give him my opinion... He has ended the auction and asked that I assist him in writing an accurate ad for the car.

It is a very solid Series V with Tiger running gear. There appears to be no intent to defraud as all of the "obvious Tiger earmarks" are not concealed or made to look authentic. The history - as he was given - seems to indicate an older transplant of Tiger running gear - and VIN - to a new body.

The dealership bought it off Ebay based on recent Tiger auction sales and intended to make a profit. I think there is an unemployed sales rep in Mesquite, Texas...

All said... The dealership was very thankful for the info and ended the auction early. I am certain you will see the car again in the near future but represented as a "V8 powered Sunbeam Alpine"...

TAC works...!

This was eBay offering

The "It has the hole in firewall so it must be original Tiger," as well as "I have not had it authenticated but I do not doubt it's authenticity,"

With the ad copy of the battery box the spare tire mounting, but the low information buyer is at a serious disadvantage. Tough to feel bad for a car dealer:rolleyes:

5 minutes a computer and a WWW connection and the poor sap could have kept his job.

Disappearing Data

That's why we encourage copying and adding pics to forum of eBay and Craigslist ads. Norm posted a pic on his "Yellow Flag," titled post.

I would only add "BLACK FLAG" in my opinion of the beast.

Mostly my view is it's parts may be added back to a car that was personalized or modified for a proper vintage appearance or to be provided to the next owner.

Bruce we can't protect the fools who rush in, but we all give can it a good shot.

The last Alger that went for big money on eBay sold for 25,000 and then on to nearly double that in Anaheim auction in 2013 I think.

In talking to a Alger owner with bits for sale the other day he said he took offense at the Alger branding. I told him I prefer Replicant ala Blade Runner. It's a great idea to build a Alpine into a retro mod.

Project Car Hobby

As long as representation is correct, I have no problem with anyone building "replicars" or "tributes" etc. Some of the craftsmanship I've seen is far better than what came with the Tigers in the first place. Re-body is another well-chewed debate we don't need to visit.

ALPINE V8 PROJECT

If I recall we had a discussion about a wrecked Tiger repaired with an Alpine rear clip. Concensus was it's a Tiger!

Tiger mash

The Tiger that got me into Sunbeams was wrecked on the rear back in the day and the rear was replaced with an Alpine's since he couldn't find any good donor Tigers in our area. He loved that car, but never felt the same after the wreck. From what I heard, he basically didn't look at it as a Tiger anymore and said he figures it would be hard to show that it was. I still have never seen this car (still waiting to meet up with the guys dad who now owns the car, after his son died).

I've only heard all this from my mom who dated the guy back in the day. It may have been an MkII, but my mom doesn't recall the year exactly. Anywho, I too don't care for the "Alger" name. I'm doing the V8 swap into my Alpine because of my respect for the Tiger, and because I can't afford a real Tiger. I've had a few people ask me about the car, and I said "well it's not a Tiger, it's an Alpine with a V8", and they said "well that makes it a Tiger now". NO! If I had put a Jaguar motor in it would that make it a Jaguar? Some people... Some day I'll try to own a true Tiger, but for now, I'll enjoy a car that is still fairly uncommon and a blast to drive (even though I've never driven it yet, lol).

And it is!

If I recall we had a discussion about a wrecked Tiger repaired with an Alpine rear clip. Concensus was it's a Tiger!

The car in question repair was disclosed, but it was easy as no attempt was made to delete the battery box.

Just like both of my cars have a one Alpine wing 82 had left replaced 821 had right replaced, I could make one complete Tiger out of the pair:eek:

I think we should put the A____ word in with the other capital words used to describe another demeaning word.

The "A____" word...

I also dislike the word but I think it has it's place. IMHO, if somebody is trying to pass off an Alpine with Tiger specific parts and in particular the data plate and JAL number, then yeah -- Alger it is. However, if somebody leaves the Alpine data plate and SAL number in it and doesn't try to pass it off as a Tiger, seems to me that "Alpine V8" shouldn't be shameful.

I had dreamy visions for my Alpine V8 project but ultimately decided that I just don't have the time. Now that the Alpine is sold, I'm on the hunt for an affordable Tiger.:D I really like the idea of the Alpine V8 as there was no requirement to stay with bolt-on upgrades for the pure-minded. That would leave much subjectivity and artistic license to be uniquely creative!;)

Cheers, -Kevin

I prefer "TiPine" as a demeaning comment . . . . .

Additional information

To date I have not been contacted by the dealer regarding relisting the car. I suspect some one got their ass chewed on this one... Question is will the dealer attempt to list it and sell it as it is or will it end up in private auction outside of the public eye... It's pretty touchy to list a car and disclose that the VIN is from another car... Stay tuned...!

I guess when you swap on as much Tiger stuff as you can then Alger would seem appropriate. I'm putting a few Tiger parts on my car just to save myself from having to make a whole new setup, but I'll leave my vin alone. I also like the idea of not worrying about hurting the value by customizing, lol.

Kyle, you are spot-on with regard to customizing. That's probably the biggest draw for me. I don't want to worry about originality.

If someone wants to call my car an Alger. I won't take offense. But, personally, I hate that term. I much prefer Alpine V8, or Tiger Clone. People regard the "re-body" term with disdain for reasons I can't fathom, as that is exactly the same thing. In fact, my car was presented to me with exactly that term when I bought it in 1990.

John.

The tiger community gets a bit testy when somebody tries to present a vehicle as being a Sunbeam Tiger when the car did not leave Rootes hands as one.

If your car proudly wears its Alpine VIN and SAL tags it doesn't matter what engine is in the car its an Alpine.

When your car suddenly sprouts a Tag that says it is a Sunbeam Tiger, then it starts being called an Alger, Tipine, rebody. Its about fraud, about trying to cash in on the price differences between Alpines and Tigers.

I've always understood it a bit differently. Terms like Alger, and the like, are used to describe any Alpine with a V8, whether genuinely represented as a conversion, or fraudulently represented as a Tiger. I think your definition of Alger, restricting it to only the latter case, is incorrect. If I am wrong, I'd like to know.

My dislike of Alger is not because of some connotation, or implication of fraud. I simply think it's a stupid name. Just because someone can use a portmanteau, doesn't mean one should.

It's just semantics...

The blending of words is a natural for the car world... Restomod would be a prime example. I agree with previous posters... Intent to defraud is one thing... Building a personalized car is another. Personally I like "V8 Powered Alpine"... or "Anglo Powered British Sports Car" My .02...

Alpine Body is Not Same as Tiger Body

The crux of the issue is that an Alpine body is not the same as a Tiger body - there were some panels used exclusively in each when the body was welded together. If a person moved an engine from their Camero to their Firebird, would one call the result a Camero or a Firebird?

I'm happy to call a person's car whatever he or she wants it to be called, as long as there is no fraud involved.
