Received my annual registration from the state of New Mexico. I can renew my registration for only $720.00. I guess they charge you based on how special you car is? Cliff

You guys need to move to Ohio. I don't pay any yearly registration fees on 5 Sunbeams. They're registered with Historical tags which means no taxes or fees of any kind, no yearly inspections and we don't have personal property taxes. Ohio does not have any testing of vehicles such as mechanical or emmisions. The initial fee to register a car will be $7.50 plus local county taxes. No fees after that for the next 50 years. The last Beam I registered this way was my RHD LeMans in 2012 and the cost was less than 20.00. You receive nothing from the BMV after that including asking for proof of insurance. The yearly registration fee for our five regular vehicles is $37.50 per year for each vehicle and the two car trailers total close to $40.00 because the fee is based on the weight. Life is easy!

125

The use tax or personal property tax is calculated from the price you paid for the vehicle in California. The minimum charge is 125 that I have seen on my Honda CT110 that does make 300 miles per year.
Many states charge personal property tax on vehicles at what they decide the vehicle is worth.
I remember the 3 second argument with Virginia that my BMW CSi was worth what I paid for it, no it wasn't it was worth what their little book said.
Wonder why my buddy who has 4 fast food restaurants and a Montana plate on his Motorhome hmmm. Cars are like cigarettes they think they can tax you till you stop using them. I don't smoke and maybe someone can explain the elasticity of demand again, just kidding.
I'm going to stop now before I get into political speech.

Keep gvmt at bay. Ohio is also know (among certain cadre) as a great Class 3 Title II NFA State. Just sayin'

Virginia is like Ohio. Historical vehicles are not charged a personal property tax and once you initially register it,the registration is good for as long as you own the car. No emissions or state inspection either.

Ohio isn't a bad place to live. Taxes are cheap, drive what you want and enjoy life.

My car

Wasn't a historical vehicle back then. Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't bagging on Va. just saying what the basis can be what they say. I get the beef Cliff has as I've been there before with boats, they are never worth the basis which they tax you at. When looking at a car for sale it's always a question, " why are you selling the car," sometimes the answer comes up it cost too much to keep it.
Classic cars are rarely the hole in the water that you throw money into, it but can be a reasonable facsimile.

Personal property tax - what a load of bollocks!

You pay tax on the income earned and buy the car with tax paid dollars, you pay sales tax when you buy the car even though it has been paid moe than once in the last 50 years, more annual tax for registration, tax just because you own a piece of property, and best of all death tax on tax paid assets.

What else has a personal property tax?

I thought that Canada was bad for tax, but apparently nothing on you.

Hog head

Cannot disagree with your logic. Basically, any personally owned vehicle is taxed: cars, trucks, motorcycles, RV’s, mobile homes and even trailers. Due between Oct and Dec EVERY year, based on current value. They use one of the price guides to determine value. Not sure of other counties in VA, but this is what we live with in Fairfax Co.

In New Mexico the MVD computer added a "0" to the yearly bill. 90,000 people received this news. MVD said they would refund anyone's money if they were foolish enough to believe their bill and send it in..

As some of you know I recently moved the Tiger from CA to AZ. The cost for an initial AZ five year registration for a historic vehicle including an extra $65 for a 1965 year of manufacture plate was $146.75. No smog or vehicle inspections required.

Warren,
There are supposed to be mileage restrictions here in Ohio but how would the state know? Once you register the car and install the plates you never again hear from the BMV. There are no inspections of any kind so the car is lost in the archives. There's no way for the state to know how many miles you drive it or if it's even insured. Many owners like myself have historical plates that are still active and in the files even though I haven't had the cars for years. I bought a car from a long time California resident and when I went to order plates here we found it still had active historical plates from Ohio. A few ticks of the keyboard took care of that. That's the difference between states. Life is simple. FYI, Ohio continues the cycle of reducing the state income tax.

Mileage

Insurer asks for mileage every year, plus other annoying questions. I'm not in the habit of stretching the truth that far. I'm not putting the electric drill in reverse on my speedometer cable either. Read the article on the link I posted. Couple of good rules I'd add,
don't give insurance company an excuse not to pay . Stretching the truth is easy until you get called on it.
They don't inspect or SMOG cars pre 1976 cars in California. Soon they may bump that up to 1983. I've only seen one tiger with the historical plate on it and the white plate does look really great up against a black car. I drive my car weekly in California . I often get an " I know why you are driving by the beach," my reply is always the same gotta check out the surf....
Pay no attention to the fact I haven't been out since boogie boards and chitlins.

Hagerty has never asked me that question or other annoying questions concerning the five Beams they insure nor has the state BMV. I've had many other cars insured with State Farm for 41 years and I don't remember them ever asking for mileage. I guess they have no reason to ask us. Of course this is a different world than what you folks have to live in. The insurance loss versus insured here is probably lots lower than what you live around in California. Even though we have large cities, our entire county consists of 24000 people. Ohio is a fun place to live.
