Shift Knob threads

Uh, a minor thing but what's the thread size for a Tiger shift knob? Odd application, but I want to use one on the lever on the keggerator I'm installing in the kitchen remodel -- have not thought it through, OEM knob or an "Amco" style with a Tiger logo.

I could probably re-tap the know to fit IF it's smaller than the beer-dispensing valve. Yes, I could pull the knob from my car to measure but that thing is on tight!

This probably means I need to source Tiger-logo pub glasses to go with the wine glasses. (Don't drink and drive!)

Looks like the shifter is 1/2-18 and the tap handle is 3/8-16.

That info will cost you a pint of your best.;)

Thanks, that makes fitment a bit of a puzzle.:( I doubt the loads on the threads are much, it might sound dumb but I could fill the hole w/JB Weld and then drill & tap.

That is, if I find a knob.. a few years ago a Google search for Sunbeam shift knob resulted in a bunch of places that had the AMCO style knob w/a Tiger or Sunbeam logo. Not now. :(

Eek! Been looking all over the place for a Tiger-logo AMCO-style knob... they've disappeared? :(

If anyone has an unwanted one floating around in a box in the garage...

Thread pattern is the least of my worries.

Here's my old Amco racing knob from the 60's. A bit worn, but vintage Tigger.

Which Tiger logo are you looking for? Tiger head, crossed flags over TIGER, etc?

Don't believe this is an AMCO but stated as Tiger. Note that description says 1/2-20 thread so my earlier post of 1/2-18 may be incorrect.

There is an AMCO knob for VW on eBay right now with shift pattern as seen in 1of5's pic

Build your own from Tigerwood

Good luck.

I just want it to say "Tiger", preferably the rectangular logo. As for shift pattern, the beer tap is only a two-speed, forward & back, unlikely to find a knob w/that pattern. ;)

I'm looking into having something made, it all turns out well, I'll share the info. Meanwhile, if anyone finds something unwanted in their garage that fits the bill...

I have one with the crest that you can have cheap... 1/2" fine thread ...

It's never been installed... sorry for the crappy 'phone' pic

Jim

Thanks, both of you! No rush. :)

I might be interested in both (1 for keggerator, one for the car) unless we're talking BON  prices. ;)

Still waiting for the custom-knob guy to get back to me, perhaps he's on vacation or something. I'm starting to think he's my "Plan B" now.

Well, as my other option is apparently not happening, I am still interested in either of both of those knobs. Still available? Post or PM, thanks.

Thanks to Jim, this arrived yesterday and now sits atop the keg "tower" valve and looks great. Thanks! Now, to figure out a decent mounting; (a) fill w/JD Weld and drill/tap, hoping I don't mar the pristine wood (B) have a machine shop make a "tube" threaded on the inside to fit the keggerrator valve and on the outside to fit the knob, (C) ???

How about a wrap or 2 of tinfoil around the threads and give it a try, if not give it another wrap or 2 till it does. Or just run a bead of epoxy on the tap threads and push and jiggle into knob a bit and let cure.

Don't recall the diams now but I think they were close. As far as threading a tube goes there won't be much meat remaining by the time it gets threaded on the outside and tapped on the inside. Although I've seen it done where a buddy made and adapter for his M/C and I could see holes thru where the threads crossed.

Not sure of status of project and not sure if this will work but will throw it out there for your consideration.

If you use the epoxy or maybe even JB weld you might try giving the male threads a shot of silicone spray. Maybe the epoxy won't stick to the threads and you will be able to screw knob on and off if need be or just to be able to adjust knob to the correct alignment.

Interesting. I thought of something parallel -- wrapping the male threads in Teflon plumbing tape for the same purposes.

WOW. Almost done with the kitchen, just a little plumbing and hooking up the keggerator and it's all over. looking for a most-elegant solution, I took the knob and the valve to a machine shop down the street from my office, and asked about a threaded adapter.

The Quote? $350

I'd still like to avoid the JB-Weld solution, but YIKES.

OK: In the interest of moving on, I'll fire up the lathe and make you a bushing. Send me the exact size and tpi of the male stub and the exact size and tpi of the female knob . . . . . . .amen
