Did I find a Tiger??

Hello to all, I just registered and I need your help. I am a sports car guy but I do not have any specific ownership of a Tiger.

I found this car and I would like to confirm that it is a Tiger. I did a quick google search about what to look for and it seems to be a Tiger but I would like the experts to confirm it.

The larger problem is that there are no ID plates of any kind in the engine bay. Is there another place where they stamped an ID number? There is a sunbeam sticker on the engine.

It is very rusty. Frame is very bad but it is what it is.

No Photos

No pictures have loaded. There are several ways to spot a Tiger even without I.D. tags. Some methods will get very dirty. Anyway, check with an administrator about the ways to load photos. We can help.

Jeff,

In answer to your question, there is no other place on the car that the factory put the VIN number. There are unique numbers on the transmission and differential that could be traced back to a particular car, but only if they are the original tranny and diff.

You can look for threads about the TAC program. This is the best way to assure that the car started off as a Tiger and is not an Alpine onto which someone has bolted some of the Tiger parts. There are differences between Alpine bodies and Tiger bodies. I know of no state or country that allows moving the VIN number from one monocoque body to another (what some call "rebodying" or "reshelling"), except for the case when the new monocoque body was specifically produced as a replacement "part".

It's impossible to say whether it is a tiger or not from the pics. It needs a pair of knowledgeable eyes to have a look in the flesh really.
As Warren mentioned, a TAC event would be ideal.

Have you bought it?
What are your plans for it particularly the shell?

Photos show a possible Tiger ? There are some underbelly "hands on" things needed to be examined. First; you should gather up the tranny and rear end #'s. Also the motor tag # and the casting date. Run all those numbers to Norm for a registry check. Original Tags may be out there somewhere . . . .
Chasing rust around a "Beam" body will be a man-hour burner fer sure. Not for the novice or a small budget!
 
It shows signs of being a real Tiger. Especially with it being aged and rusty vs a fresh restoration. Too bad there are no tags. Did the previous owner have a title to at least identify a VIN#?
 
Quite possibly a Tiger but a TAC would make sure. As Oneoffive says Norm could probably identify it with the engine, gearbox and rear axle numbers. I would not be surprised if there is an Alger out there with your VIN and JAL #s - this could get interesting.
 
First off thanks for everyone help.

I did buy it. Out of a field (I forgot to take a picture) with a bush growing up through it. It must have been there for years. I felt an obligation to get it out of there before it returned to the earth.

I have it on a trailer currently. Can someone post the location of where I can find the engine cast number, trans and rear numbers for me to check. The engine does have a sunbeam tag on the driver side valve cover.

With the tranny and diff numbers, Norm should be able to tell you what the VIN and JAL numbers are supposed to be - IF the tranny and diff were original to a Tiger. But that is no guarantee you have an authentic Tiger. The tranny and diff could have been transferred to an Alpine body. The TAC inspection is more definitive. A registry check just proves that the VIN, JAL, tranny, and diff all belonged to the same Tiger originally.
 
rear end # is on an aluminum tag attached to one of the center section bolts.

Hi Jeff:
The tranny number is a tag on the forward right side of the tranny case. The actual rear end casting # is very hard to I.D. and is stamped under the pinion nosing of the rear. It will be feint and require lots of wire brushing & cleaners. A bright flashlight helps. The motor casting # is under the starter while the date code is forward left of the distributor down in front of the left head. Again, lots of cleaning but it will be there. The rocker cover tag #'s will also be of value. Hopefully, all the parts will belong together . . . . . .
 
Chalk

On the rear end use white chalk and rub into casting then wipe lightly to allow chalk to stay in number stampings. Registry will ask for pictures. On trans its easy to photo in car with flashlight and inspection mirror and take pictures of mirror, it kinda takes 3 hands and comes our backwards but not much room in trans tunnel. Key cylinders also have numbers and its a fiddly job but all are persuasive evidence.

She looks real far gone and the market is not kind to car's without original tags.

We like to see em saved to be sure. You are an old car type, like the 2002 on your Facebook page . Should you want to post more pictures be happy to help.

PS the valve cover is the least reliable indicator,please focus on the trans and rear end then lock cylinders.
 
The car is not at my home it is at my office. I have a pretty busy week but I will try and crawl under it and get some numbers ASAP.

Looks like the car was resting along side the Titanic......Good find, now the long road begins. Hopefully you can find a decent donor car to aid in the resurrection of this car.

A photo of the other side of the inside of the trunk would help. On the right side a hole through the wall above the battery should exist where a hose would let out battery hydrogen gas. There are more Tiger specific things on the left side and forward side of the trunk.
