Is there supposed to be a washer between the reservoir and MC? Or is there supposed to be one inside the reservoir under the stainless steel washer and t reservoir? Either way, what material should this be?

Mine has a copper crush washer between the MC body and reservoir.

Under the reservoir.. if you have a Tiger reservoir there is also an internal rubber seal. The Alpine reservoir doesn't have this. Although they look the same at first glance, they are very different parts! The current repro is based on the Alpine reservoir.

It is a repro MC, but original reservoir. There is what appears to be a nut on the MC that may be rubber. I should have taken pictures when I had it apart but was grimy and not in the best of moods after fighting the wheel cylinder re-install. Wow is it different than a couple bolts and done on a typical American WC.

I have one, I'll dig it out and take some pics!
 
As promised, here's the pic of a tiger reservoir. the difference between the Tiger and Alpine is that the metal threaded port that inserts into the master is square cut on the Tiger. The alpine part has a male flare as it is threaded into a female union on a separate brake line between it and the master cylinder.

You can use an Alpine reservoir for the Tiger but it won't be possible to get it oriented centered with the master. The Tiger unit can be dismantled in place, accurately centered, and then reassembled. the metal connector is splined which locks the reservoir in place once the inner nut, washer and seal are compressed.

LHD series 4 Alpines had the plastic brake fluid reservoir that was mounted on the brake master cylinder. Series 1 had the reservoir mounted on the inner fender and series 2 had the reservoir mounted to the upper firewall. These were metal reservoirs. Series 5 Alpines had a plastic reservoir mounted on the firewall. I buy the plastic reservoirs and fittings from Pegasus. They refer to them as the Girling style. Their plastic reservoirs have 12 notches so you can set the orientation where desired. There are various height reservoirs available as well as fittings and crush washers to fit the reservoirs. They also have masters in various sizes for use on many British cars. I have the larger reservoir on my green car and the shorter version of reservoir on the wife's blue car..

I just fixed a leaking reservoir a couple of days ago.
Alpine style cup as shown by Sean, and supplied as a Tiger part.

A fat o-ring on the cup to MC surface, and another under the bolt head for good measure - leak cured
 
Doug @ Tiger Auto made me aware of the items available from Pegasus many years ago at a time that parts were not available thru the usual Sunbeam suppliers. I tend to make folks aware that there are new parts available thru other sources to replace units that have developed a wear problem that could create a problem at a later date if not properly repaired. I've also used O rings until I had time to replace the unit.
