Reputable Auto Shippers

Is there any other way besides reputation to judge a car shipper? I have been recommended 2 shippers by a fellow Tiger owner and their quotes were different by $700 with the lesser quote because of the size of the Tiger compared to larger vehicles. Does anyone know the current rate for inop shipment; is it $1/mile or less or more? Also one dropped out as soon as I started emailing with more details about dropoff/contract/insurance/etc. Maybe I was asking too many questions or they would rather talk on the phone.

I was trying to check with the BBB from their respective states and I believe that they will only be in the system if there is a claim/grievance on them. Also when looking for reviews the only ones that are in the databases that I've googled are the shippers that registered on those sites. I would guess that the good shippers don't use these review sites and again rely on their reputation.

I have finally made room in my garage and am ready to ship my inop Tiger cross country from CA to DC, which is probably a different circumstance for most of you guys out there, who seem to be fine tuning your Tigers. But some have to start somewhere.

I just want to make sure that my car/parts get to me since this is my "dream car". I am sorta a pessimist as you will remember me as the guy who purchased a hardtop just to keep all the spare parts within the car for shipment. I seem to recall a thread about someone shipping a car and then asking if someone knew of a Tiger in the same trailer, so I know that there are good shippers out there.

SHIPPING

RELIABLE was well represented at Barrett-jackson in Scotsdale auction in January

I've used Intercity Lines more than once. I highly recommend.

In-Op moving

I've had good and not so good experiences with most of the major shippers. The helpful key is to document your car with high-res photos and listing the condition & contents. I always remove the tail lights and front directionals. Chubb?Haggarty?/Other? with stated value insurance quotes during shipping is a must. No affil, etc.

I have used Dependable Auto Shippers 3 times and all were good, plus they were reasonable in price. Good luck.

I shipped a tiger from Cal to Aus. The shipper was very good and the car (origional, damaged) arrived in great condition for what it was. At the same time I had a complete doner alpine cut up and shipped with the car. Now I was there when the container was opened. The blokes opening it walked right over the panels lying in front of the car. I yelled at them to get off. I was delighted to see the shipper had included a screen with frame in the package. I then waited for customs and quarenteen to do there thing and charge lots $.

at pick up I noticed they had broken the screen in the replacement parts. Do you think they admitted it? so off to the shipping agent (our side of the pond) and after many emails they agreed to replace the screen. So finally all good.

Another Vote for Intercity

Robert

I used Intercity this past winter to ship my Tiger back and forth to Florida (from VA) for some Concours. I will add my thumbs up for their service. I shopped around and although they were not the cheapest, they were not the most expensive either. I think the round trip helped a bit on the price.

a sad story

Well... just got back from the USofA with my buddy's 'new' TR3A ...

He searched for about a year for a rust free, no accident car and finally found one in Florida... He had it shipped through DAS and paid an extra premium which meant that there were only 3 cars in the semi and it was pretty much a straight haul to Washington state, Unknown to the owner was that DAS subbed the job out and the car arrived last Thursday. I was originally going to just drive him down and he was going to drive it back but decided to take my trailer and haul it back to Canada instead... When they called to say it was in Tacoma there was no mention of any problem...
When we got there yesterday, they said there was a problem in transit and the car had damage... it was a very long day to say the least !! We didn't get back to the border in time to get through the export office so had to spend an extra night... just got back this afternoon...
The car has been rough estimated to have at least $15k damage and being as the purchase price was $23k, it may yet get written off!! Time...and I'm sure MUCH communication will determine that...

It was such a nice car when bought.............

A sad tale indeed :(

Jim,

thats horrible.. IIRC Duke had a problem when he shipped his tiger which got sorted eventually.

When exported my silver tiger i was lucky enough that Jeff drove it down in his enclosed race trailer and delivered it to the shippers. I paid to have the car sent in an individual container to limit any risk of damage. I also asked to be present at the unpacking...

while the car arrived safe and undamaged they didnt call me till AFTER the car had been unpacked, and the container removed.. my car was sitting there with a thunderbird from the states... i was always unsure if they shipped the two in the same container, hence the "we forgot to call you when we unpacked it yesterday" despite the many emals and calls to check when it was arriving.

that said.. as a travel buddy it was appropriate.. frod 8 and same designer.. thank you K Howes

Thomas Sunday Transportation

I ended up using Sunday Transports and was very pleased with the results. It was an enclosed trailer and it was in there with a 60s Mercedes Convertible, Bentley, Hudson, and new Boss Mustang. They arrived at my brother's house on time, loaded it and picked up a few cars afterwards and delivered it when I requested. Quote was for inop car and LAT hood and I thought that it was reasonably priced. Wish they were a little later, so that I could stuff more stuff in the passenger compartment, but oh well. I would use them again as well.

Autozipper

I have used autozipper twice.....once for my tiger. they were very competitive, on time and best yet.....no damage both times. Both cars were shipped enclosed....Florida to Vancouver, B.C. Obviously, it is important to take many pictures and walk the car with the driver and have him sign off on the current condition and make sure insurance is in place! good luck!

wow--that is terrible. Hopefully all the repair costs will be picked up by the shipper with no hassles. I would think they would have to tell the customer if they sublet out the work....

It is a sad story indead, but I always insure any car I buy before I drive it home.
When I imported my Tiger I paid insurance on shipping. When it arrived it was insured before it left the port.
This thread has just reminded me that now since spending 150 million on fixing the body I need to adjust the insurance.

Mal you got insurance on the shipping? WHen i imported mine (and a few other guys i know) they would only insure for total loss on second hand cars, they would not do damage. Apparently they will only do damage on new products. I offered them that i would have the car video recorded when packed to show there was no existing damage etc... still no dice. I also tried to insure it with my vehicle insurer.. they said sure, bit only from the minute it was unloaded from the container.. not before. It was a nervous wait.

My story -

I had the Tiger shipped in an enclosed car hauler from NH to Kansas. On the day that the car was supposed to be delivered, I got a phone call from the shipper. “Sir, something happened to your car in route”. They loaded an AMC Javelin with no engine or brakes behind mine. In the process, it got away from them and smashed into the back of the Tiger. ~$3000 worth of damage occurred. The shipper dropped the car off with Greg Johnson (a metal sculptor and auto restorer) in Wichita, KS.

Greg did fantastic work on the car and the damage was completely removed with just about no body filler used.

The shipper paid the bill. I also did not pay the shipper what he wanted. Told him that he missed the delivery date by over a month and I would only pay 50% and he was lucky to get that. I can't remember who the shipper was.

I will load some pics of the damage later.

When shipping my Tiger home from Florida last winter they bent the antenna. Now I know that pales in comparison to some of the stories already provided, but I mention it only because of the response from the company and driver.

While still on the road the driver called me to inform me. He sounded beside himself and could not apologize enough. By the time he called me he had already called several Sunbeam specific part places trying to locate an antenna for me. I eventually replaced the antenna at minimum cost and the company picked up the tab...albeit a small one. It was the way they reacted more than the amount involved that impressed me.

Anyone ever use NAT

Nationwide Auto Transport?

If you have used them to transport your classic car or whatever?

Let me know how it went? and about what was bad and or good.

PM or a public post if you have anything to share. Thanks.
