Sunbeam Tiger long distance rally

Ouch- I suspect the rim has had it - Can they get parts flown in -Karl
I'm not sure about the wheels. I know they are to allowed to just keep buying tyres ...they have to carry their spares for the event...hence why the prewar cars with their side and rear mounted spares were all bringing 4-6 spare tyres.

Given the rim is junked...not sure the rule... The other issue is the tyres are custom made for them from Pirelli..so they can't buy another off the shelf anyway....

So.. updates...

Patrick got the wheel sorted in Kazakhstan, and got 2 additional tyres and a replacement for the damaged one.

The replacement bronze drive gear on the distributor was also failing again, but sorted. And another spot weld on the sump baffle pulled through..but is sorted

The brackets for the rear shocks have also managed to hold.

The rally is now into Turkey, and ..good news... The Watts won a special stage and came 3rd in another.

And who will be driving YOUR support vehicle? No, my Tiger would not be available! 😃
Think that would be the Toyota Hilux support cars....

There was actually a very sad incident a few days ago in Kazakhstan, the oldest car in the rally a 1914 American Le France caught fire... Not sure what the cause...but it certainly a "project" now.... 😞

The crew were not injured.

In a terrible irony, American LaFrance is known more for its fire trucks than it is for cars. Sorry to hear about the car, but glad no one was injured.

Additional irony is they were interviewed before that day... And they said it's been 8000km ...the cars and drivers are both very tired and it's important now to focus on keeping things together and make it to Paris.... 😞

I'm also unsure if they had tried to use modern extinguishers when it started.. or if it broke out to fast..you can see other competitors stopping.. this photo was sent to me by one of them ..but was well under blaze when they arrived 😥

Pam and Patrick finished the event on Sunday in Paris, they had a very turbulent last couple of days .. continued ignition issues and failing cools that lead to very bad backfiring that led to the air filter catching fire at a petrol station in a spectacular way apparently....
Lots of rushing around.. got going... Had a coil fail again on the final run into Paris...but managed to get going and make the finish ...
Epic voyage....

I'll post some more photos later... I'd love to post Patrick's messages as they are quite colourful...but maybe language describing events as they happen are not appropriate for a public forum 😅

A couple of quick images

The event was won again by an Australian car ( think 3 overall victories now) Leyland P76.
